Music & Lyrics by Jeff Lynne & John Farrar
Book by Douglas Carter Beane
Based on the Universal Pictures film, Screenplay by Richard Danus & Marc Rubel
Originally produced on Broadway by Robert Ahrens, Dan Vickery, Tara Smith, B. Swibel, Sara Murchson, Dale Smith & Cari Smulyan
Xanadu follows the journey of a magical and beautiful Greek muse, Kira, who descends from Mt. Olympus to Venice Beach, California in 1980 in a quest to inspire a struggling artist, Sonny, to achieve the greatest artistic creation of all time – the first ROLLER DISCO! The hilarious, roller-skating, musical adventure about following your dreams despite the limitations others set for you, rolls along to the original hit score composed by pop-rock legends Jeff Lynne (of Electric Light Orchestra) and John Farrar, and includes, “Magic,” “All Over the World,” “Suddenly,” “I’m Alive,” “Evil Woman,” “Have You Never Been Mellow,” and “Xanadu,” to name a few.
At once a hilarious send-up of the cult 1980 Universal Pictures film of the same name, which starred Olivia Newton-John and Gene Kelly and was so panned it spawned the creation of the Golden Raspberry Awards for the year’s worst films, and a feel-good romp through the culture of the 1980s, Xanadu perfectly blends satire, parody and drama to create a moving, electrifying tale of endless fun.
The original production of Xanadu opened on Broadway in 2007 to glowing reviews and was subsequently nominated for four 2008 Tony Awards, including Best Musical. It broke house records at the Helen Hayes Theatre, where it enjoyed a run of over 500 performances. The original cast included Tony nominees Kerry Butler (Hairspray), Tony Roberts (Play It Again, Sam) and Mary Testa (42nd Street, On the Town); Cheyenne Jackson (Glee, 30 Rock), and Star Search winner Marty Thomas. Other awards & nominations:
2008 Outer Critics' Circle Award for Best Musical
2008 Drama Desk Award for Best Book of a Musical
2008 Drama Desk Award nominations for Best Musical; Best Director, Leading Actor, Featured Actress in a Musical; Best Choreography
